Multi-instrumentalist and music educator Darren Young is quickly establishing himself as a vital part of the Western Canadian music scene. He concertizes frequently as a soloist and chamber musician on classical guitar, electric guitar, double bass, and ukulele, and is rapidly gaining attention for his work in the bands Diatessaron, Jung People, The Northwest Passage, Evan Freeman, and Lucky Sonne. His busy performing schedule has taken him across Canada, the United Kingdom, United States, and France. Between all of his projects, Darren has received international press coverage from outlets such as the CBC, Global, CTV, Classic Rock Presents Prog, and Fireworks Magazine.

His concert programs often revolve around contemporary works or lesser known selections by composers in the canon. This interest in the obscure has contributed to his role as a core member of the Timepoint Ensemble, a new music performance group in Calgary. With Timepoint, Darren has participated in presentations of Louis Andriessen’s “Workers’ Union”, Ted Hearne’s “23”, Peter Ablinger’s “Black Series”, and Steve Reich’s minimalist masterpiece “Electric Counterpoint”.

In 2015 Darren co-wrote the soundtrack to the film “Empyrean” with his band Jung People, for which they won an AMPIA Award for Best Original Score (Drama, Over 30 Minutes). The film premiered at the 2015 Calgary International Film Festival.

Darren is currently the President of the Classical Guitar Society of Calgary, an organization that promotes guitar and arts education, and brings internationally acclaimed classical guitarists to Calgary for concerts and Masterclasses. He has twice attended the prestigious Aspen Music Festival and School, and holds degrees in performance from the University of Calgary and the University of Toronto.
